Welcome to and thanks for visiting Richard Hannon Racing.tv
This site is designed to keep our owners up to date with all the goings on at Everleigh and Herridge, with all the latest news and reactions throughout the year.
For those of you not familiar with our set-up, we'll be introducing you to members of our team from the staff in and around the yards, our jockeys and obviously the Hannons - both Yours Truly and Richard Junior.
REACHING the top of your profession is tough enough, but staying at number one is even harder, so imagine the sense of satisfaction at Herridge when I was was crowned champion Flat trainer for the second year running in 2011. I had to wait 18 years to win a second title, and then, like London buses, two have come along in quick succession, and there was a remarkable similarity with the two championship winning seasons. This year we finished top of the pile with 213 winners on the domestic scene, just one fewer than in 2010, and the two-year-old contribution of 122 was identical to what it had been 12 months earlier. However, with 19 Group winners on home soil – Dick Turpin also bagged a G1 in Milan and Lilbourne Lad a G2 in Ireland – we raised the bar yet again on the Pattern race front with win and place prize money of £3,715,321, easily a record for the stable.
Obviously, the chart-topper was again Canford Cliffs, who justified the decision to keep him in training at four when winning two more G1’s, the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, where we finally managed to lower the colours of that mighty French mare Goldikova. It was sad that Canford Cliffs’s season was cut short when he sustained an injury in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, but he has been in great demand since joining the elite band of stallions at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, and, as with the produce of Dick Turpin, who has taken his place at the National Stud, we look forward to having his sons and daughters back here in the years to come. We are renowned quick-starters, and we again came out of the blocks flying, with Dick Turpin winning the G2 Sandown Mile in April, while happily, the horses stayed healthy right through the year and the juveniles again proved an exceptional bunch. Harbour Watch, unbeaten in three races, including the G2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, was another forced to take an “early bath”, but he is progressing well following that injury and will be back next year, while Best Terms also proved one of our young stars, winning both the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and the Lowther Stakes at York, so there is plenty to look forward to in 2012, especially as Strong Suit, who recaptured his two-year-old brilliance when rattling off a brace of G2’s in the Lennox and Challenge Stakes to add to his G3 celebration in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, will be back as a four-year-old to lead the team into battle.
It might be my name on the licence, but winning the trainers title has been very much a team effort, and, besides a terrific bunch of back-room boys (and girls) both at Herridge and Everleigh, we are indebted to Peter and Ross Doyle, who, together with Richard jnr, have somehow managed to find so many of these bargain-buys at the bloodstock sales, and of, course, to Richard Hughes and our other jockeys who have done us proud yet again. We have been busy at the Sales trying to unravel the stars of 2012, and, though the yearlings have been snapped up pretty quick, give us a call if you fancy a slice of the action as there might be one or two “legs” left . You will find that it is quite fun – and maybe even profitable!
Thanks for stopping by,
Richard Hannon |
